4425일 만에 다시 만난 눈먼 소년 (2023년 5월 24일)

2011년 4월 9일에 이 블로그에 썼던 글을 우연히 다시

읽었습니다. 예산에서 사과를 키우시던 김광호 선생님이

보내주신 글입니다. 선생님이 연세 드시며 사과 농원을

그만두시면서 제가 사과 향기 맡는 일과 선생님과 연락하는

일이 줄었지만 저는 여전히 선생님을 존경합니다.

 

선생님은 주한 미국대사관 도서관장으로 일하신 후 은퇴하셨고

선생님이 보내주시는 글들 중엔 영어로 된 것이 많았는데,

그때 받은 영어 원문과 제가 축약 번역한 것을 함께 게재한

것입니다. 4425일 만에 다시 만난 글, 선생님을 뵈온 것처럼

반가워 여기 다시 옮겨둡니다.

선생님, 안녕하시온지요?

 

눈 먼 소년 하나가 건물 계단에 앉아 있었습니다. 그의 손에는 "저는

맹인입니다. 부디 도와주셔요"라고 쓰인 피켓이 있고 발치엔 모자가

놓여 있었지만 그 속엔 동전이 몇 개 되지 않았습니다.  지나가던 남자가

주머니의 동전을 꺼내어 모자에 넣어주었습니다. 그는 피켓 뒷편에

무언가 써넣고는 자리를 떴습니다. 모자에 돈을 넣어주는 사람이

훨씬 많아져 모자는 곧 가득 찼습니다.

 

오후에 그 남자가 다시 왔습니다. 그의 발소리를 알아챈 소년이 '오늘

아침 제 피켓에 뭐라고 쓰셨나요?"하고 물었습니다. 그는 진실을 썼다고,

소년의 말과 같은 뜻의 말을 조금 다르게 썼다고 말했습니다. 그는 이렇게

썼습니다. "오늘은 아름다운 날입니다. 하지만 저는 그것을 볼 수가 없습니다."

 

피켓 양쪽에 쓰인 말은 모두 소년이 맹인임을 알려줍니다. 처음에 적은 말은

소년의 눈이 멀었다는 사실만을 얘기하지만, 새로 적어넣은 말은 보는

사람들로 하여금 볼 수 있는 눈을 가졌으니 얼마나 행운인가 상기하게 합니다. 

 

여러분이 가진 것에 감사하시고, 창의적이고 혁신적인 다른 방식으로,

긍정적으로 생각하십시오. 삶이 100 가지 이유로 당신을 울리려 하거든

당신을 미소 짓게 할 1000 가지 이유가 있음을 기억하십시오. 미소 짓는

사람을 보면 행복하지만, 당신 덕분에 미소 짓는 사람을 보면 더욱 행복합니다. 

지난 일을 후회 말고, 오늘을 신념으로, 두려움 없이 내일을!

 

 

A blind boy sat on the steps of a building with a hat by his feet.  He held up

a sign which said: "I am blind, please help."  There were only a few coins in the hat. 

A man was walking by.  He took a few coins from his pocket and dropped them

into the hat.  He then took the sign, turned it around, and wrote some words. 

He put the sign back so that everyone who walked by would see the new words.

Soon the hat began to fill up.  A lot more people were giving money to the blind boy. 

That afternoon the man who had changed the sign came to see how things were.

 

The boy recognized his footsteps and asked, "Were you the one who changed

my sign this morning?  What did you write?"  

The man said, "I only wrote the truth.  I said what you said but in a different way.  

"I wrote: 'Today is a beautiful day; but I cannot see it.'" 

 

Both signs told people that the boy was blind.  But the first sign simply said

the boy was blind.  The second sign reminded people how fortunate they were

to have their sight.  Should we be surprised that the second sign was more effective?       

 

Moral of the Story:  Be thankful for what you have.  Be creative.  Be innovative. 

Think differently and positively. When life gives you a 100 reasons to cry, show life

that you have 1000 reasons to smile.

 

Face your past without regret.

Handle your present with confidence. 

Prepare for the future without fear. 

Keep the faith and drop the fear.  

 

It's a beautiful thing to see a person smiling. But even more beautiful is knowing

that you are the reason for the smile!  Faith is not about everything turning out OK; 

Faith is about being OK no matter how things turn out.
