여인의 눈물 (2011년 5월 12일)

예산 희원농원의 김광호 선생님께 제가 최근 출간한 책 <우먼에서 휴먼으로>를 보내드렸더니, 아름다운 글과 사진이 담긴 파일을 이메일로 보내주셨습니다. 파일의 제목은 <Tears of a Woman(여인의 눈물)>입니다. 사진을 옮길 줄 몰라 글만 옮겨둡니다. 원문엔 영어만 있어 제가 우리말로 대충 옮겼습니다.

 

 

A little boy asks his mother. Why do you cry?  (어린 소년이 어머니께 '왜 울어요?' 하고 물으니)

Because I am a woman she answers.             ('여자라서 그래'라고 대답합니다.)

I don't understand, he says.                        (소년이 '무슨 말인지 모르겠어요' 하니)

His mother hugs him and says: and you never will. (어머니가 그를 포옹하며, '영영 모를 거야'합니다.)

 

Later the little boy asked his father: why does mommy cry? (나중에 소년이 아버지에게 '엄마는 왜 울어요?'하고 물으니)

All women cry for no reason is all that his father could answer him.

('여자들은 이유 없이 울어'하고 대답합니다.)

 

When he became an adult, he asked God. (소년은 어른이 되어 신에게 물었습니다.)

God, why do women cry so easily? And God answered: (여자들은 왜 그리 쉽게 우나요?)

When I created women, she needed to be special.(신은 '내가 그들을 특별히 만들어서 그래' 라고 대답했습니다.)

 

I created her shoulders strong enough to bear the weight of the world...

(그들의 어깨가 세상의 무게를 견딜 수 있을 만큼 강하게)

And soft enough to be comfortable.(그러나 편안하고 부드럽게 만들었지.)

I gave her the strength to give life,(생명을 잉태할 힘을 주었지.)

The kind that accepts the rejection that often comes from children.(아이들의 불손을 이겨낼 힘)

I gave her the strength to allow her to go on when everybody else gives up.(모두가 포기할 때 포기하지 않게 하는 힘)

The kind that takes care of her family despite illness and fatigue.(아프고 피곤해도 가족을 돌보는 힘)

I gave her the sensitivity to love her children unconditiionally.(자녀들을 무조건 사랑하는 힘)

Even when they have hurt her deeply. (자녀들이 깊은 상처를 줄 때조차)

I gave her the strength to endure her husband in his faults.(남편의 결점들을 견디는 힘)

And to stay at his side without weakening.(그리고 꿋꿋이 그의 곁을 지키는 힘)

And finally I gave her tears to shed whenever she needs them to be shed. 

(그리고 마지막으로 필요할 때면 언제나 흘릴 수 있는 눈물을 주었지.)

 

You see, my son, the beauty of a woman is not in the clothes she wears, nor is it in her face or in the way she does her hair.(여인의 아름다움은 그녀의 옷이나 얼굴이나 머리 모양에 있지 않단다.)

The beauty of a woman resides in her eyes.(여인의 아름다움은 그녀의 눈에 있단다.)

It is the door to her heart; the door where love resides.(그것은 그녀의 마음으로 가는 문, 사랑이 있는 곳으로 가는 문이란다)

And it is often through her tears that you see her heart go by.

(그리고 가끔 눈물을 통해 그녀의 마음이 가는 곳을 볼 수 있단다.)
