유산 (2022년 7월 30일)

재력과 권력의 세습으로 '개천의 용'이 멸종되어가는 세상에서

유산을 물려줄 수 없는 부모들은 자녀에게 미안함을 느끼기 쉽습니다.

그럴 땐 '결핍 속에서 창의력이 발현된다'는 사실과

<월든 (Walden)>의 몇 구절을 떠올려 보면 어떨까요?

 

월말이 올 때마다 월세와 공과금을 내느라 애쓸, '유산을 받지 못한' 사람들에게

<월든>의 아래 구절들이 위로가 되었으면 좋겠습니다.

 

 

“I see young men, my townsmen, whose misfortune it is to have inherited farms, houses, barns, cattle, and farming tools; for these are more easily acquired than got rid of. Better if they had been born in the open pasture and suckled by a wolf, that they might have seen with clearer eyes what field they were called to labor in. Who made them serfs of the soil? Why should they eat their sixty acres, when man is condemned to eat only his peck of dirt? Why should they begin digging their graves as soon as they are born?”

“이 고장 젊은이들의 불행은 농장과 주택, 창고와 가축과 농기구들을 유산으로 받은 데 기인한다. 이런 것들은 일단 얻으면 버리기 쉽지 않다. 그들이 차라리 광막한 초원에서 태어나 늑대의 젖을 먹고 자랐으면 더 나았을 거다. 그랬으면 자신이 힘들여 가꿔야 할 밭을 보다 맑은 눈으로 볼 수 있었을 테니. 누가 이들을 흙의 노예로 만들었는가? 한 펙 (약 9리터)의 먼지만 먹어도 될 것을 왜 60에이커나 되는 흙을 먹어야 하는가? 왜 그들은 태어나자마자 무덤을 파기 시작하는가?”

 

 

“The portionless, who struggle with no such unnecessary inherited encumbrances, find it labor enough to subdue and cultivate a few cubic feet of flesh. But men labor under a mistake. The better part of the man is soon ploughed into the soil for compost. By a seeming fate, commonly called necessity, they are employed, as it says in an old book, laying up treasures which moth and rust will corrupt and thieves break through and steal. It is a fool’s life, as they will find when they get to the end of it, if not before.”

“유산을 물려받지 않아 그런 불필요한 짐과 싸우지 않아도 되는 사람들은 작은 육신 하나를 다스리는 것만으로도 힘겨워한다. 그러나 사람들은 잘못된 생각 때문에 고생하는 것이다. 사람의 육신은 조만간 땅에 묻혀 퇴비가 된다. 사람들은 흔히 필요성으로 불리는 거짓 운명의 말을 듣고, 한 옛날 책에 쓰인 대로, 좀 먹고 녹슬며 도둑이 들어와 훔쳐갈 재물을 모으느라 정신이 없다. 그건 바보의 삶이고 그들은 그 사실을 삶의 종착역에서 혹은 그 전에 깨달을 것이다.”
