교황과 콘돔 (2010년 11월 23일)

교황 베네딕토16세가 오늘 발간될 자신의 책 <세상의 빛: Light of the World: The Pope, the Church and the Signs of the Times>에서 '남성 접대부 등 어떤 개인들은 콘돔을 사용해도 된다'는 요지의 말을 했다고 해서 세계 언론이 들끓고 있습니다. 피임은 하느님의 뜻에 반하는 일이라며 콘돔 사용을 반대해온 교황청의 태도에 아주 미세하나마 변화의 조짐이 보인다는 것입니다.

 

교황이 그같은 발언을 한 것은 독일 언론인 페터 시발트(Peter Seewald)가 <세상의 빛>에 실릴 문답을 위해 에이즈 관련 질문을 했을 때라고 합니다. "세계 에이즈 환자의 25퍼센트가 가톨릭 시설에서 치료받고 있고, 레소토에서는 그 비율이 40퍼센트나 된다. 이런 상황에서 위험하기 짝이 없는 상황에 처한 사람들의 콘돔 사용을 금지하는 건 미친 짓이라는 비난이 있는데 어떻게 생각하느냐"는 질문에 답하면서이지요.

 

교황은 작년 3월 아프리카 순방길에서조차 콘돔 사용이 에이즈를 막는데 기여하기보다는 에이즈의 확산을 부추길 거라고 말하여 에이즈 예방 단체들의 저항을 일으켰습니다. 사실 시발트의 질문에 대한 교황의 답변도 예전과 크게 다르지 않았고 '남성 접대부'와 같은 사람들의 경우만 예외로 언급한 것인데, 날카로운 기자들이 그 짧은 발언에서 변화를 읽어낸 것입니다. 교황의 답변을 정리하면 이렇습니다.

 

 "가톨릭은 콘돔 사용이 현실적이고 도덕적 해법이 아니라고 보고 있으며 콘돔 사용은 에이즈란 악에 대처하는 실질적 방법도 아니다. 그러나 남성 접대부가 콘돔을 사용할 때처럼 몇몇 개인들의 경우에 콘돔 사용의 근거가 있을 수 있다. 이 경우 콘돔 사용은 원한다고 무엇이든 할 수 있는 건 아니라는 깨달음으로 가는 책임감의 시발점이 될 수 있다. 그러나 콘돔으로 에이즈라는 악을 다스릴 수는 없다. 해결책은 성욕을 인간적으로 다스리는 것뿐이다." 

 

유엔에이즈계획(UNAIDS)은 즉각 성명을 발표하여 '바티칸의 중요한 진일보'를 환영했고 대부분의 언론도 교황이 보여준 '틈새'를 반가워합니다. 그러나 교황이 지적한 대로 에이즈 예방에 있어 콘돔보다 중요한 것은 '성욕을 인간적으로 다스리는 것'입니다. 인간이 개발한 콘돔을 사용하여 감염을 막는 것도 인간이 다른 동물과 다름을 보여주지만, 그보다는 인간이 성욕을 다스림으로써 자신을 다른 동물들로부터 차별화했으면 좋겠습니다. 아래에 영국 BBC 방송 웹사이트에 올라 있는 교황의 인터뷰 중 콘돔 관련 부분을 옮겨 놓았으니 참고하시기 바랍니다.

 

"As a matter of fact, you know, people can get condoms when they want them anyway. But this just goes to show that condoms alone do not resolve the question itself. More needs to happen. Meanwhile, the secular realm itself has developed the so-called ABC Theory: Abstinence-Be Faithful-Condom, where the condom is understood only as a last resort, when the other two points fail to work.

 

This means that the sheer fixation on the condom implies a banalization of sexuality, which, after all, is precisely the dangerous source of the attitude of no longer seeing sexuality as the ｅxpression of love, but only a sort of drug that people administer to themselves. This is why the fight against the banalization of sexuality is also a part of the struggle to ensure that sexuality is treated as a positive value and to enable it to have a positive effect on the whole of man's being.

 

There may be a basis in the case of some individuals, as perhaps when a male prostitute uses a condom, where this can be a first step in the direction of a moralization, a first assumption of responsibility, on the way toward recovering an awareness that not everything is allowed and that one cannot do whatever one wants. But it is not really the way to deal with the evil of HIV infection.

That can really lie only in a humanization of sexuality.

 

Peter Seewald: Are you saying, then, that the Catholic Church is actually not opposed in principle to the use of condoms?

 

Pope Benedict: She of course does not regard it as a real or moral solution, but, in this or that case, there can be nonetheless, in the intention of reducing the risk of infection, a first step in a movement toward a different way, a more human way, of living sexuality."
