<대만, 아시아태권도연맹에 정식사과와 보상요구>

 대만이 아시아태권도연맹(ATU)에 정식사과와 보상을 요구하는 성명서를 발표했다.

19일 대만 행정원은 성명서를 통해 “ATU는 대만 태권도 선수 양수쥔(楊淑君)의 실격판정에 대한 잘못을 인정하고 사과해야한다"며 "적당한 보상 뿐 아니라 납득 가능한 설명도 해야 할 것"이라고 강조했다.

이어 "ATU가 지난 3일동안 양 선수의 실격이유라며 홈페이지를 통해 발표한 것은 모순과 고압적 자세를 그대로 보여주는 것"이라며 "ATU는 양 선수가 발 뒤꿈치에 2개의 전자센서를 붙이고 있었다는 사실을 시합도중 발견했다고 했지만 전자센서는 시합 전 모두 제거된 상태였다"고 지적했다.

또 "양 선수의 양말에 전자센서 2개가 부착된 것이 발견돼 시합이 중단됐다고 했지만 시합이 중단되었을 때 그녀의 발 뒤꿈치에는 전자센서가 없었다"고 덧붙였다.

성명서는 이어 "대만이 속임수를 썼다"는 주장에도 비난을 가하며 "전체 사건의 전말이 조사되기 전에 이 같이 근거 없고 부적당한 주장이 발표돼 대만 국민은 돌이킬 수 없는 상처를 받았다"고 강조했다.

이어 ATU측이 대만태권도협회에 의해 제공된 설명을 재검토하고 평가했다고 말한 것에 대해서도 “대만 대표들은 회의실에 들어가 결과만 통보받고 나왔을 뿐"이라고 반박했다.

 세계태권도연맹에서 이번 사안을 조사한 후 양 선수와 코치에 대한 징계여부를 결정할 것이며, 대만 태권도 연맹에 대해서도 재조사 한 뒤 적절한 조치를 내릴 것이라고 발표한 것에 대해서도 “대만은 이번 판결에 대해 수용할 수 없다”는 입장을 강조했다.

 또 “체육위원회가 대만팀 단장과 부단장, 올림픽위원회 사무총장을 통해 대만 선수와 코치를 보호하기 위한 정식 항의를 제기할 것”이라고 전했다.

 마지막으로 ATU측이 오해와 잘못된 정보로 행해진 실격에 대해 공정한 태도를 취해줄 것을 거듭 요구했으며 우둔이(吳敦義) 행정원장은 "양 선수는 여전히 대만의 영웅이며 그녀를 환영한다"며 그녀에 대한 계속적 지원을 지시했다.

Executive Yuan: ATU should acknowledge mistake and apologize

The Republic of China (Taiwan) Executive Yuan issued a strong-worded statement November 19, demanding the Asian Taekwondo Union (ATU) and its official website to acknowledge its mistake of disqualifying Taiwan athlete Yang Shu-chun at the Asian Games and to apologize for improper allegations against Taiwan and its delegation.

The Cabinet also asked that the ATU provide a plausible explanation as well as proper compensation to Yang.

Video recordings at the games proved that accounts of the incident appearing on the ATU website over the past three days had been "inconsistent, self-contradicting and overbearing," the statement said.

The Cabinet challenged the ATU’s explanation in the statement. It pointed out that the ATU said Yang was discovered during her match to be wearing two electronic sensors on her heels, but “the truth is that the extra sensors had been removed from Yang’s socks prior to the match.”

Regarding the ATU’s claim that Yang’s match was halted as her socks were found to contain two extra electronic sensors, the Executive Yuan said there were no sensors on her heels at the time when the game was interrupted.

Concerning the ATU website’s press release calling the event a “shocking act of deception by Chinese Taipei," the Executive Yuan said the accusation was purely unfounded and extremely inappropriate as such a statement was released before it agreed to reinvestigate the entire case. “The allegation made against Yang and Taiwan’s team has resulted in irreparable damage to our delegation at the Asian Games and people of Taiwan,” the Cabinet statement said.

The ATU claims that it had reviewed and assessed the explanation offered by the Chinese Taipei Taekwondo Association. The truth is however, that a meeting was held where the original decision was upheld, and Taiwan’s representatives were only asked to enter the meeting room afterward and notified of the results,the Cabinet statement added.

The ATU further recommended that Yang and her coaches be banned until their case is heard by the World Taekwondo Federation Ethics Committee, and that the Chinese Taipei Taekwondo Association and its officials be investigated further by the WTF Ethics Committee, with proper punishment handed down. However, Taiwan is unable to accept the original decision, and the Sports Affairs Council has asked Taiwan’s national teamleader, deputy leader and Olympic Committee Secretary General to file an official protest in defense of the Taiwanese athlete and coaches and their rights to participate in the competition.

The Cabinet demanded that the ATU adopts a fair, impartial attitude in dealing with the issue regarding the disputed disqualification case and refrain from using misleading and distorted information.

Premier Wu Den-yih expressed his extreme disappointment at this unjust treatment of Yang, an outstanding athlete and gold-medal aspiring competitor. The government will accord Yang with a hero’s welcome upon her return, said the premier, who has instructed the SAC to set aside funding to support Yang’s future training and education.
