땅과 태양과 동물을 사랑하라 (2026년 5월 7일)

어젠 오랜만에 만난 젊은 친구들과 맛있는 밥을 먹고 커피를

마시고 햇살 아래를 걸으며 5월 바람을 맞았습니다. 산책길

주변 아카시아는 진한 향기로 5월을 노래하고 참새는 푸른

나뭇잎 속에서, 통통한 비둘기는 땅에서 행복했습니다.

모두가 행복하니 저도 행복했습니다.

 

월트 휘트먼(Walt Whitman:1819-1892)이 1855년에 출판한

시집 <풀잎:Leaves of Grass>의 서문에서, 왜 '땅과 태양과

동물들을 사랑하라'고 했는지 이해하는 시간, 그 시간을 제게

선물해준 혜선 씨와 혜은 씨에게 감사하며, <풀잎>의 서문에서

이 문장이 나오는 부분을 아래에 옮기고 그중 앞부분만

번역해둡니다.

 

 

"땅과 태양과 동물들을 사랑하라, 부를 경멸하라, 구걸하는

사람에게 자선을 베풀라, 어리석은 사람들과 미친 사람들을

옹호하라, 너의 소득과 노동을 남을 위해 쓰라, 독재자들을

미워하라, 신에 대해 왈가왈부하지 마라, 사람들에게 인내와

관용을 베풀라(하략)"

 

 

"This is what you shall do: love the earth and sun and the

animals, despise riches, give alms to every one that asks,

stand up for the stupid and crazy, devote your income and

labour to others, hate tyrants, argue not concerning God,

have patience and indulgence towards the people, take off

your hat to nothing known or unknown, or to any man or

number of men, go freely with powerful uneducated persons,

and with the young, and with the mothers of families, read

these leaves in the open air every season of every year of

your life, re-examine all you have been told at school, or

church, or in any book, dismiss whatever insults your own

soul; and your very flesh shall be a great poem, and have

the richest fluency, not only in its words, but in the silent

lines of its lips and face, and between the lashes of your eyes,

and in every motion and joint of your body."
