뻔뻔한 일본인들-뉴저지 위안부 기림비 철거 청원 (2012년 6월 24일)

반성을 모르는 일본인들이 백악관 홈페이지를 통해 미국 뉴저지의 펠리세이즈파크시 시립도서관에 건립된 '일본군 위안부 기림비' 철거 요구를 벌이고 있다고 합니다. 2010년 10월에 건립된 이 추모비에는 '1930년대부터 1945년까지 제국주의 일본군에 의해 납치된 20만 이상의 여성들을 추모하며, 참혹한 인권 범죄를 잊어서는 안된다' 고 씌어 있다고 합니다.

일본인들은 백악관 홈피에 이 기림비 철거를 위한 청원서를 올려놓고 서명을 독려하고 있는데 6월 20일 현재 서명인 수는 32,119 명으로 25000명을 훌쩍 넘었다고 합니다. 백악관 측은 곧 이 문제에 대한 공식 입장을 밝힐 거라고 합니다. 규정상 청원 서명 시작 후 30일 이내에 25000명 이상이 참여할 경우 백악관 측은 이에 대한 공식 입장을 밝혀야 한다고 합니다.

일본인들은 이 청원서에서 한국 위안부 여성들과 관련된 '거짓'이 일본 국민들을 수십년 동안 불명예스럽게 했다고 주장하며 오바마 대통령에게 이 추모비를 제거해달라고 요구하고 있습니다. 이 글 말미에 청원서의 원문을 옮겨두니 읽어 보시지요.

이 파렴치한 행위에 대응하여 '나눔의 집'에서는 6월 12일 백악관 홈페이지에 이 비를 철거하지 말라는 청원서를 올렸다고 합니다. 6월12일부터 7월 11일까지 25000명 이상이 서명해야 하는데 6월 20일 현재 겨우 74명이 서명했다고 합니다. 청원서의 내용을 요약하면 일본 식민 지배 동안 5만 명에서 20만 명에 이르는 한국 여성들이 강제로 일본군을 위한 위안부 노릇을 했으며 그 중 68명만이 한국으로 돌아왔다. 1992년부터 지금까지 매주 수요일 그 여성들은 주한 일본대사관 앞에서 사과를 요구하는 시위를 벌여왔으나 일본 정부는 침묵으로 일관하고 있다. 오바마 대통령은 기림비를 그대로 두어 국제사회와 후대 일본 국민들에게 교훈을 주게 해야 한다.

Preserve comfort women monument as a symbol of bloody history of Korea during Japanese colonization

During Japanese colonization, approximately 50,000~200,000 Korean women, according to most scholars, have been tricked, kidnapped, and were forced to leave their country to become military sexual slaves by Japan. In many cases, women were lured with promises of work in factories. only 68 of the women managed to return to Korea. 

From 1992 until now, every Wednesday, the comfort women of Korea are holding a demonstration in front of the Japanese embassy for governmental reparations, formal and individual apologies, yet Japan replies with silence, ignorance and distortion of their brutal history.

We strongly urge President Obama not to remove the monument, and let Japan’s crime be the lesson of the history not only to the international society but also to the people of Japanese posterity.

Remove the monument and not to support any international harassment related to this issue against the people of Japan.

False accusations regarding the South Korean comfort women issue have disgraced the people of Japan for decades. Over the past few years it has come to light that many of the original charges were false or completely fabricated.

Yet despite this new information, the United States continues to lend credence to the original false charges by memorializing the comfort women in a monument in New Jersey and a street name in New York. Not only is this perpetrating historical untruths, but it also leads unnecessary racial conflict and suffering of people of Japanese ancestry.

We strongly request President Obama to remove the monument and not to support any international harassment related to this issue against the people of Japan.
