타이베이 101 계단 오르기 (2012년 6월 13일)

 

대만 정부에서 보내주는 Taiwan Today라는 이메일 뉴스레터에는 다양한 소식이 실려 있습니다. 어제 온 이메일에는 6월 10일에 타이베이에서 제일 높은 건물인 Taipei 101에서 치러진 계단 오르기 경기 얘기가 있습니다. 4천 명이 넘는 사람들이 91층 건물의 계단 2,046개를 뛰거나 걸어 올랐다고 합니다. 호주 사람 마크 번이 11분 26초로 일등을 차지했고, 여성 중에서는 이탈리아에서 온 발렌티나 벨로티가 2년 연속 일등을 했다고 합니다. 참가자 중엔 맹인 마라토너도 있고 어려서 다리 하나를 잃은 춤꾼도 있었습니다.

올해 8년 째를 맞은 계단 오르기 경기... 이 경기에 관심을 두는 이유는 이것이 실명 예방 행사이기 때문입니다. 스탠다드 차터드 은행과 국제실명예방기구가 함께 이 행사를 열어 많은 사람들의 실명을 예방한다고 합니다. 전 세계에는 3천 9백만 명의 맹인이 있는데, 그들 대부분은 개발도상국이나 도시 빈민지역에 살고 있으며, 그 중 80퍼센트는 예방이나 치료를 했으면 실명되지 않았을 거라 합니다. 우리 속담에 '눈이 보배'라는 말이 있습니다. 눈이 보이는 모든 분들이, 보이는 눈을 가진 것에 감사하며 눈이 보이지 않는 사람들을 위해 할 수 있는 일을 찾았으면 좋겠습니다. 기사의 원문을 아래에 옮겨두니 한 번 읽어 보시지요.

Taipei 101 Run Up attracts international field

The annual Taipei 101 Run Up saw over 4,000 professionals and amateurs climb 2,046 stairs to the 91st floor of Taiwan’s tallest building June 10. In its eighth year, the competition divided contestants into four categories, including elite runners, corporate teams, fundraising relays and individual amateurs, organizers said.

 

Mark Bourne of Australia snatched the title in the elite men’s division, completing the race in 11 minutes, 26 seconds, while Italian Valentina Belotti took the women’s division for the second year in a row with a time of 13:21.

 

The race was part of charity collaboration between Standard Chartered Bank and the International Agency for Prevention of Blindness to raise funds to prevent and treat avoidable blindness. Physically impaired runners such as blind marathoner Jack Lai and Zhai Xiaowei, a dancer from mainland China who lost a leg at the age of four, exemplified the spirit of the contest.

 

Up to 39 million people around the world are blind, with most in developing countries or deprived urban areas, but in 80 percent of cases their blindness could be prevented or treated, according to organizers.

 

Standard Chartered’s Taiwan branch, which sponsored the event, said that after it matches the contributions from registration fees, NT$4 million (US$133,616) will be donated to ORBIS International, a nonprofit organization working to prevent blindness and offer treatment in developing countries. Since 2004, the bank’s Taiwan branch has raised NT$25 million for this global initiative, organizers said.
